Understanding the Stress and its Effects

The word stress is used so often that we now tend to take it for granted. The truth is, stress can lead to serious mental health issues, as well as have adverse effects on our health. There are no real treatments for this problem. Instead, sufferers may use a combination of methods to alleviate the effects of stress. Sometimes the answer lies in avoiding contact with identified causes. Many doctors and therapists suggest a variety of relaxation methods to cope with stressful situations.

Types of Stress

This problem is typically broken down into two types, physical and emotional. Obviously it is easier to detect the signs of physical stress. The person may display signs such as:

1. Excessive sweating

2. Agitation

3. Sudden outbursts

4. Accelerated heart rate

When dealing with emotional stress, those closest to the individual may be the first to notice changes in behavior. Some of these are:

1. Suicidal thoughts

2. Depression

3. Withdrawing from friends and family

It is important to note that the two types often share symptoms. A doctor can often handle cases of physical stress, which is a response to the immediate environment, for example a job. People suffering from emotional stress often seek help from therapists.

Stress of any kind can lead to destructive behavior. Some sufferers may turn to alcohol to help them cope. It is not uncommon for them to also turn to smoking or hard drugs to deal with the problem. The problems with using these substances, plus the effects of stress itself can be damaging both physically and mentally. Health problems which result from stress include:

These and other conditions make it clear that stress must be controlled once it is identified. Some people have developed lifelong conditions because of stress. It should be noted also that children can suffer from stress and that every effort should be made to help them to overcome it and deal with the situations that causes the stress.
