Irrespective of class, creed, region or religion, drug addiction is a major problem which is growing into threatening proportions throughout the country. Unfortunately, this serious problem hits where it hurts the most, i.e. the youth of any nation. Though grown up people also face the problem of drug addiction it is more prevalent amongst youths because they fall easy prey to the vice.
If you look at the history of a drug addict and try to find out the reason for his or her becoming a victim to it, it would not be surprising to learn that family problems contribute a great deal to their taking the path or drugs. So if drug addiction of substance abuse has to be fought effectively, it should be tackled at the root. The root inmost of the cases is disturbed childhood and insufficient parentage.
If we as parents were more accommodative and disciplined towards each other and towards our children, the problem would have been nipped in the bud. It is a much better way of tacking this menace rather than going into rehab, detoxification and all such complicated things once the problem has taken place.
However, when prevention is not possible and if it has been found out that a person has fallen a victim to drug abuse, the most obvious thing that we should do as family members is to refer the victim to a rehab house and start treatment without a single days’ delay. It would also make great common sense to inform the patient that he or she has a problem which needs to be addressed and for which his or her cooperation is very essential. Once the patient comes back cured and fit, the family members need to introspect and find out whether they were one of the contributing factors for the person slipping into this bad practice.
