Aspergers is part of the Autism spectrum, a developmental disorder which affects how their brains process things. Although people with Aspergers have an intelligence level well in the range of what is normal, they often have trouble interacting with others, and generally obsessive with a specific subject. Aspergers in children
Many of the symptoms and behaviors that are linked to Aspergers Syndrome can be quite typical during a child’s development, a lot of their behavior is similar to that of children with Autism. So it is always best to consult your doctor before jumping to any conclusions. Their behavioral symptoms include; children with Aspergers often develop a specific interest and become obsessed with it, they don’t always understand why other’s aren’t as interested as they are. Changes to their routine can upset them, they have a tendency to over react in these situations.
Aspergers in adults
Statistically, more men than women are diagnosed with Aspergers. Generally adults with Aspergers have average or above average intelligence, but they often have difficulties with language skills like verbal reasoning and problem solving. They also have difficulty taking part in small talk, and take conversations quite literally. For people with Aspergers, routine is something that they have difficulty living without. A disruption in their behavior can result in anger and even violence.
Treating Aspergers
Aspergers syndrome has no known cure. Due to the varying nature of the illness the treatment will have to change slightly for each patient. Many of the treatments involve behavioral modifications, and after a while they learn new behaviors which make it easier for the patient to function in society. With treatment, the patient can go on to get a job and maintain a career. The younger the patient is, the more effective the treatment will be.
